Judge Allows Patriot Coal To Cut Retiree Benefits
ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– Members of the United Mine Workers Union who have been staging protests outside of Patriot Coal’s offices are calling a bankruptcy court judge’s ruling Wednesday wrong and unfair.
The judge ruled in favor of proposals by the company to eliminate its collective bargaining agreements and cut off retiree health care.
The union says bankruptcy laws favored the short-term financial interests of the company over the interests of longtime workers and their beneficiaries.
The union plans to appeal the ruling.
