WILDWOOD, MO (KTVI) – There were some tense moments Wednesday morning in a Wildwood neighborhood after some residents had to be evacuated when a gas main broke.

It happened a little after 8:00am Wednesday on Audubon Village Drive south of Manchester Road.

Authorities tell us a contractor replacing concrete slabs on the road hit a four-inch natural gas main, rupturing the line.

Five homes were evacuated for a time as a precaution.

Crews checked several other houses and the sewers for high gas levels.  Fortunately, none was found.

More than two hours later, Laclede crews got the gas turned off and started repairs.

The evacuated residents were eventually let back into their homes.
