Heat Index May Reach 104 Thursday

(KTVI) - Dangerously hot weather is expected in the St. Louis area on Thursday.  According to the National Weather Service, the high temperature will reach 96 Thursday afternoon under mostly sunny skies.

The heat index is expected to hit 104 degrees.  The extremely hot weather is expected to spill over into Friday with a high of 95 degrees and a heat index of 101. But the weather could be cooler and wetter by the weekend.

Helpful Cooling Tips

  • Check on neighbors, young children, those without air conditioning, people with medical conditions and the elderly.
  • If you do not have an air conditioner, go to an air conditioned place during the warmest times of the day.
  • Drink plenty water. Avoid drinks that contain caffeine.  Avoid alcohol or large amounts of sugar. Never wait until you are thirsty to drink.
  • Keep shades, curtains and blinds closed during the day.
