Students support professor who killed parents as a child

DECATUR, IL (KTVI) – A professor who murdered his family when he was a boy is getting attention and support in Decatur, Illinois.

Dr. James St. James chairs the psychology department at Millikin University.

When he was a boy, he went by the name Jim Wolcott and he admitted shooting his parents and sister to death in 1967.

He was only 15 and was deemed "not guilty by reason of insanity."

After six years in prison, he was freed.

On the Millikin University campus, former students who are learning about his past are supporting their professor.

One explained, “He has done exactly what our court system is set up for him to do. He went above and beyond to use that experience to teach us as students and improve other people's lives.”

The story came to light after a two-year investigation by a Texas newspaper.

St. James has been a professor at Millikin since 1988.
