Police capture man wanted for murder, beating

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- He was wanted for murder and a host of other charges and on Thursday night, the intelligence unit of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police department took  25-year-old Rico Combs into custody.

A police spokesperson said there was a brief foot pursuit in the 28-hundred block of Victor before Combs was taken into custody.

Earlier in the day authorities were asking for help in locating a man facing 14 criminal charges.

"We are not recommending that anyone try to approach him or make contact with him," said St. Louis assistant circuit attorney Tanja Engelhardt.  She wanted anyone with information on Combs to call 911.

Police say Combs crashed through an apartment window in the 800 block of N. 7th Street on Wednesday night, shot and killed one man, critically wounded another and then assaulted the mother of his children.

He faces a host of a criminal charges including1st degree murder, armed criminal action and endangering the welfare of a child.  Police say he lived in the 28-hundred block of Arsenal.

Englhardt says that mother was hiding in a closet when Combs busted in, holding her 7, 5 and 3 year old children.

"Mr. Combs was armed with a weapon and was trying to shoot the victim as she huddled with her children in that closet," said Engelhardt.

Engelhardt said Combs tried to shoot the mother but instead the gun left a mark on her forehead.

"For lack of a better word, it looked like a target," said Engelhardt.

She said the mother took out an order of protection earlier in the day.  Authorities hope this tragedy will not keep other victims from coming forward.

"There is a lot of help out there," said Engelhardt.  "We certainly don`t want this case to cause anyone to not seek help from law enforcement or other agencies."
