Police: Woman gets kids to pull off $100,000 jewelry heist
GRANITE CITY, IL (KTVI) – Madison County Sheriff`s investigators say on August 27th Geneshia Grey went to the Hurley and Company Jewelry store in Granite City with two kids ages 6 and 8. She had the kids to steal more than $100,000 worth of jewelry. It was in the middle of the day, and it was all caught on tape. A family member of Grey found the stolen goods and told police.
Owners tell FOX 2 Grey distracted them while the two children went behind the counters with bags and took 69 jewelry boxes. The owners who have been at the West Chain of Rocks store for 6 years say they’re disgusted and even more so because the suspect used kids to do her dirty work. Store assistant Scott Paolucci says the theft was outrageous, bold and calculated.
“We had some people come in here and decided to take it upon themselves to take a lot of jewelry that wasn’t theirs. The woman was basically blocking his view so the kids could do what she told them to do.
“She would hand them her purse, and they would take the purse go back there and you can see their little hands going in and grabbing jewelry,” said Paolucci.
At this point police have recovered $10,000 worth of merchandise. The owners are working with police to tighten up security. In the meantime, police are looking for Grey who’s currently on the run.
“We plan to post a video and buy a TV and put it up and loop it to show her reaching up and stealing so people can see we have you on camera you will get caught. It`s a shame to be so blatant about it like that its bad,” he said.
Investigators were only able to recover about $10,000 worth of stolen jewelry. Polie are looking for Geneshia Grey. They believe she is staying somewhere in East St. Louis. If you have any information call Madison County Police at: 618-296-3000.
Grey’s bond has been set at $70,000.
