CHESTERFIELD, MO. (KTVI) – Baseball experts believe Max Scherzer is one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.   Even though he’s an All-Star for the Detroit Tigers, he has a good number of fans in St. Louis.

Scherzer graduated from Parkway Central.  He also pitched for the University of Missouri at Columbia.  Scherzer gave his former college some props on national television Saturday.  Scherzer had the score of the Missouri Tigers football game pasted on his Detroit Tigers sweatshirt.  Mizzou defeated Georgia 41-26.

“I’d love to see the Cardinals and the Tigers in World Series,” said John Rieker, Mizzou alumnus.

One of Scherzer’s former classmates at Parkway Central High School recalled watching the future major league pitcher.

“He threw 90 miles per hour in high school,” said Mike Morrealle.

Another classmate recalled how baseball practice for the JV squad would occasionally be cancelled if Scherzer was pitching for varsity.  Coaches wanted player the chance to see Scherzer pitch.

“He would pitch a one-hitter or a no-hitter and hit a home run,” recalled Maxwell Fenger.

Scherzer’s former classmates hope the Tigers and Cardinals will square off in the World Series.

“I’m going to want him to do well,” said Morreale. “I’m still a Cardinals fan at heart, so I’m going to want the Cardinals to win regardless.”
