MONTGOMERY CITY, MO (KTVI) – A Montgomery City business owner was charged with DWI on Thursday, after police say he struck and killed a pedestrian.  Montgomery City is roughly 70 miles west of St. Louis.

Around 2:00 am Thursday, Curtis Huenefeld was driving home after closing his bar, called the Pit Stop. Meanwhile, residents say the victim was walking to her car on North Walker Street, after celebrating her birthday.

There's no sidewalk and few streetlights, and according to investigators, she was walking on the pavement. That's when police say Huenefeld struck and killed her.

Montgomery City has a population of fewer than 3,000 people and residents say almost everyone is connected. This case is no different. FOX 2 is told the victim's sister works at Huenefeld's bar. He and the victim also knew each other.

Many residents know him as a well-respected man in town and a very hard worker. However, court documents detail another story.

In 2006, Huenefeld pled guilty to driving while intoxicated. In recent years, he also refused a breathalyzer and was cited for driving while his license was revoked.

In his latest DWI, court documents note he is a persistent offender.

Those who knew the victim say she is survived by three children.
