Outrage after company uses Sandy Hook shooting picture for marketing

NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) — A company used a picture of the destruction at Sandy Hook Elementary School as part of a push to sell bulletproof glass.

That email went to town and school officials throughout the state and immediately sparked outrage.

At first glance, Monroe First Selectman Stephen Vavrek said he thought it was a mistake. Commercial Window Shield in South Carolina used a photo of the front window at Sandy Hook Elementary School right after the gunman destroyed it with bullets.

“To me when I saw this picture it brought the whole day back to me,” Vavrek said.

The children and staff, who survived Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting where 20 children and six adults lost their lives on Dec. 14, 2012, are now in his town. The city of Monroe gave them a school that was no longer being used.

Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra was so outraged that she sent a letter to the company and they sent her an apology.

“We understand that the email was insensitive and disrespectful…Our intention was never to profit from a tragedy,” Commercial Window Shield wrote in the apology.

“(I) hope no one does this again because it’s the wrong thing to do,” Vavrek said. “Sell your glass because it’s good, but don’t do it using a real crime scene.”

Eyewitness News called Commercial Window Shield and their officials said they were sorry.

Vavrek told Eyewitness News he was concerned when some of the photos were made public because things like this would happen.
