CARBONDALE, IL (AP) – The $4.2-million makeover of Southern Illinois University’s baseball stadium in Carbondale is finished.

The Southern Illinoisan reports the renovated ballpark now named after one of the Salukis’ celebrated coaches was christened on Wednesday.

The work wasn’t included in the university’s 10-year, $83-million Saluki Way improvement project announced in 2005. The university system’s governing board approved a $5 million budget in 2012 for the stadium, with $2 million coming in private donations.

The retooled Richard “Itchy” Jones Stadium bears the name of the retired coach who went 738-345-5 in Carbondale. He was a two-time NCAA national coach of the year and led the Salukis to 10 NCAA tournament appearances, including three trips to the College World Series.

The Salukis were the national runner-up in 1971.
