MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO (KTVI) – On Saturday hundreds of volunteers spent their day cleaning up the rivers and creeks along the Confluence Greenway and Missouri/Mississippi Rivers. There were four locations including Creve Coeur Lake and the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. Roland Biehl with the Missouri Sewer District says there's more to more to the event than just clean up.
'We collected 1,500 tires from one location last year. Whenever it rains it gets conveyed to creeks and channels and that can impact water quality and cause blockages in creeks and streams.' said Beihl.
The Confluence Trash Bash started 6 years ago Steve Klutho has been there the whole time. He says it`s always good to give back to the community.
Great Rivers Greenway and Trail Net along with MSD and others sponsored the event.
'I just think it`s really important to do it just nice to be able to drive by here and see all of the trash that was here before all gone.' said Klutho.
At the end of the day volunteers were treated to a meal and awards for the most unique finds and there`s no doubt they will be back for next year`s big bash.
"I think it`s really neat to say you helped out." Klutho said.
'One time someone found a prosthetic leg with a shoe still on it. Not only are we protecting the environment it`s also a very social event for families to get out.' Beihl said.
