Sparks (KTXL) — A former Marine is facing kidnapping, sexual assault and child pornography charges after allegedly taking two teen girls from Modesto to a Sparks, Nevada hotel.
Investigators say it was Facebook that helped them track down the missing girls and lead to Nicholas Wessel’s arrest.
A 15- and 14-year-old girl ran away from their Modesto homes.
Sparks, Nevada Police officers say Wessel convinced the two to go with him to Nevada, and he rented a room at the Sparks Nugget.
Sparks Police were notified by Modesto Police the teens and Wessel could be in their city.
Police tell FOX40 that Wessel had connected with the girls through Facebook. Officers say they were able to get information from the social media company that located the girls.
“Facebook assisted us and gave us their last IP address where they logged in from, and it came back to the Nugget [hotel] in Sparks Nevada,” Ivan Valencia, of the Modesto Police Department, told FOX40.
Nevada officers learned Wessel had forced sex with the younger teen, and found a camera containing several illegal images of children.
Wessel is facing felony charges and is sitting in a Nevada jail. FOX40 has learned he is a former Marine and used to be based at Camp Pendleton.
His most current address is in Richmond.
