ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – Police are warning people about a telephone scam from a man using their called ID.

The Metropolitan Police Department released a statement saying that they have been getting phone calls from across the state.  People report getting a call from a man claiming to be an IRS agent.  He states that the victims owe money to the government.  The scammer then says that if they don’t pay then a warrant will be issued for their arrest.

The caller ID the man is using is identical to the Police Department’s telephone number, 314-444-5555 and non-emergency number 314-231-1212.  Police would like the public to know that the calls are not being made from the Metropolitan Police Department.

An investigation is underway to determine the origin of the calls, and the identity of the male caller.
