ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - A St. Louis Priest has entered a not guilty plea in a child sex abuse case.   Father Joseph Jiang is being accused of having sexual contact with a 14-year-old boy. The case came after a call to the Missouri Child Abuse and Neglect hotline.  Father Joseph worked at the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica. He was also accused of molesting a teenage girl in Lincoln County late last year.  However, those charges were dropped.

A friend of Father Jiang says this is all about money.

"Apparently it is another family,  a different family and we think this is about money and they have gone after him again," said Lucy Hannegan. "He`s a target now and so we`re concerned that he will be targeted continuously and that people are after money from him or the Archdiocese   We don `t believe in the charges. We believe Father Joseph is innocent."

But Barbara Dorris of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) says,  "There are far easier ways to get money than to try to attack the church. Witness the last go around.  The church has almost unlimited resources  They are a very powerful organization. This is not an easy thing to do."

He is currently free on a $150,000 bond.

Jiang is due back in court July 21, 2014.

These are criminal charges. No money involved.
The Lincoln County charges were criminal charges. No money involved.
Two kids who don’t know each other and say they were abused by a priest. Two sets of parents believe them. Two sets of police believe them. Two sets of prosecutors believe them.
This is some kinda greedy conspiracy? Gimme a break!

It’s amazing how some people keep defending pedophile priests. There is a mountain of evidence against this pervert.

Are the good Catholics of St. Louis going to do nothing while a handful of their fellow parishioners keep trashing the reputations and motives of parents whose kids were hurt by Fr. Jiang? Come on folks, if you have ANY suspicions or information about Fr. Jiang – or any abusive clerics or their complicit colleagues – PLEASE summon up the courage to speak up!

May the heavenly intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph her most chaste spouse obtain for all those involved (accused, accuser, archbishop, judge, jurors, prosecutor, defense attorneys, …) in the criminal and civil cases surrounding Fr. Joseph Jiang every spiritual good they need that these matters might be resolved in a manner most pleasing to Almighty God.

Fr. Jiang is my friend, and I pray for him daily. From all I know of the case, I have great confidence in his innocence. Even so, I pray and hope for mercy, grace, justice and healing for *all* involved.

Also, I would encourage readers here to remember that even though Fr. Joseph belongs to an of late oft despised profession — the Catholic priesthood — he has the same rights as any of us and should be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Can these loyal followers of Fr Joseph Jiang, explain why they claim this is all about money? If that was the case, why did the first family turn over to the police the $20,000.00 check that Jiang placed on their car after this family learned their child had been abused by him?

Let’s hope these naive statements will not deter any others who may have knowledge or who may have been harmed by Jiang to come forward and contact police.
It takes a lot of courage to speak up and take action about being sexually abused. This is not an easy thing to do, but it is extremely rare that a child predator has only one victim. Some have many. Child predators need to be kept far away from kids forever. So let’s hope that anyone who may have knowledge or may have been harmed by Fr Joseph Jiang, will find the courage to speak up, get help, and contact law enforcement, no matter how long ago it happened.
Your silence only hurts, and by speaking up there is a chance for healing, exposing the truth, and therefore protecting others. Judy Jones,SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests
