Howard Powers Phillies Past Cardinals

Ryan Howard really likes playing in his home town. The Phillies slugger drove in three of his team’s four runs in a 4-1 win over the Cardinals on Thursday night at Busch Stadium. Howard smacked his 14th home run of the season to give Philadelphia a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning. It is the tenth home run Howard has hit in Busch Stadium III. Howard, a Lafayette High School alum has the highest opponent batting average at Busch Stadium as well at .373.

The Cardinals were stymied by Phils starting pitcher David Buchanan. He pitched into the eighth inning allowing just one run on four hits. Matt Carpenter’s eighth inning single produced the Redbirds lone run. Shelby Miller allowed all four runs and suffered the loss, dropping his season record to 7-6.
