(KTVI) - It has been a very warm and humid afternoon as the first of two cold fronts slowly eases south through Missouri and Illinois. As expected, thunderstorms have been slowly increasing roughly along the I-70 corridor, especially in central Missouri. Those storms will be increasing somewhat in coverage as they progress east and southeast Sunday evening.
Thunderstorms will become likely for areas along and south of I-70 by early evening, including pretty much the entire metro St. Louis area. Widespread severe weather is not expected. However, one or two of these storms may get strong or briefly severe with gusty winds and some hail and plenty of lightning. These storms will be a concern for outdoor plans like the Muny Opera this evening.
While any downpour may be fast and only last a couple of minutes; there are several pockets running through the band that will result in several periods of rain in many spots on and off into early tonight.
The general trend will be for the front to nudge the rain/storms further south with time and rain chances should be south of St. Louis by midnight and out of the viewing area by 3:00 am.
Another, stronger cold front will blow through Monday.
