MARISSA, IL ( KTVI) - St. Clair County has just approved a location for a medical marijuana farm in Marissa, Illinois. After a roll call the proposed zoning variance passed 21 to 4 in favor of Nature`s Care. Buyers will be able to purchase pot in Marissa only if the company is awarded a license from the state. The approval of that farmland in Marissa has been a big topic of discussion.
Since Illinois made medical marijuana legal earlier this year growers like Nature`s Care are looking for new places to set up shop. According to Illinois state law medical marijuana facilities can only be built in one of the state’s 22 police districts. Board members also say 30 new jobs are expected along with a new sheriff`s substation near the proposed 20,000 square foot processing facility.
Getting your hands on the pot won`t be an easy task. There are strict guidelines and background checks for both sellers and buyers seeking treatment for 30 severe illnesses. Nature`s Care will submit an application for a state license sometime in the next two weeks. Company reps also plan to sell foods and drinks along with the plant. If a license is granted the company could be up and running by next fall.
