“There was no convincing them”: Police use tear gas on curfew breakers

FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) – Police in Ferguson were forced to use tear gas on a crowd of protesters who refused to obey the midnight curfew.

Around 12:30, the large group staged near West Florissant and Chambers used cars to create a barricade.   Police officers gave several warnings before they put on gas masks.

About 12:40 a.m., officers started moving slowly toward the group and released tear gas.   That’s when several shots rang out.  There are unconfirmed reports that one person was shot during the incident, but police did not fire shots.

St. Louis Alderman Antonio French tweeted picture of people he says were refusing to leave.  French says when the tear gas was deployed, he and Mo. Senator Jamilah Nasheed got into his car and rolled up the windows.   French was later escorted from the scene by police.

He told FOX 2′s Chris Hayes that the group of protesters had no intentions on leaving.

“We working on that particular group a lot today, but there was no convincing them,” French said of the protesters.

The crowd seemed to disperse after the tear gas. Police remained on the scene lined around business in the area, protecting property.

Authorities say people in the area do not want a repeat of the violence and looting that occurred overnight Saturday.
