MEHLVILLE, MO (KTVI) - St. Louis County Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in south St. Louis County.

It happened just after 9 a.m. in a shopping plaza near the South County Mall.  Authorities say there was an altercation at the KMart store in the 3900 block of Lemay Ferry. They say a "known theft" suspect tried to steal more than $30,000 worth of jewelery from the KMart.

When the officer tried to arrest the suspect they say, he took off in a silver SUV.   Witnesses say the officer was hanging on to the speeding vehicle. At some point the suspect was shot in the leg. He is expected to be okay. Police say before the shot was fired officers tried to use tasers, but they did not work.

An officer was hurt during the struggle and taken to a hospital, but he is also expected to be okay.
