ST. CHARLES COUNTY, MO (KTVI)- A passerby by noticed a fire at a home around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday morning, so they frantically banged on the door to alert anyone inside the home.

After no one answered, they quickly called 911.

Firefighters arrived at the scene on St. Peters Howell Road around 2:00 a.m. They began dousing the home with water right away, but the flames were so intense that most of the home was gutted.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to smother the fire. After searching the home and speaking with neighbors, firefighters learned that the elderly homeowner was not at home at the time of the fire.

At this point, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

No other homes were damaged.
