WASHINGTON COUNTY, MO (KTVI) - A school in Lonedell Missouri was locked down and secured by sheriff's deputies after it was believed a man planned to gun down a five year old child. It all came to an end at the suspect's house in Richwoods about 7 miles south of the school. Neighbors heard the shootout between the suspect and authorities.
Donna Smith, a neighbor, said, "All of sudden we heard one shot and whole bunch of them went off." Neighbor James Huskey added, "Just multi different sounds it was pistols, shotguns it was like 15 to 30 shots."
It all started to unfold shortly after 2pm Thursday afternoon when Franklin County got a call that a man was going to Lonedell School to shoot a five year old child.
Family members reported the suspect was upset after receiving a letter from Jefferson County that he had been charged in a sexual abuse case. The suspect was then seen at what's believe to be the child's home. The man walked around the outside of the house carrying a gun and then left.
Lonedell School was put on lockdown and secured by deputies. The search began for the suspect. He was spotted heading south apparently back to his own home. The suspect's neighbors reported seeing him enter his home with a rifle. Law enforcement began establishing a perimeter around the home. The SWAT team was called out
The suspect was seen on his back porch by a trooper. The man fired a shot and missed. The trooper returned fire and hit the man. Neighbors describe the suspect as very unusual.
Felishia Smith said, "The first day I met he said that he was in trouble for supposedly molesting five year old." Smith also said, "I told my husband I didn't want him back at my house because I have kids of my own he just really gave me a vibe I didn't want him around me."
On the side of the suspects' work shop white pieces of paper marked the spots where some of the shots hit, at least 21.
The trooper who shot the man immediately began first aid. At last report the man was in critical condition. At this point his name has not been released.
