CREVE COEUR, MO (KTVI) – Mercy Breast Centers are now offering the latest technology in screening and diagnosing breast cancer. 3D tomosynthesis mammography is similar to traditional mammography testing, but doctors say the three-dimensional screening offers more views of the breast tissue which could lead to earlier detection of tumors.

Mercy Breast Centers in Creve Coeur and Ballwin have the new testing equipment. The test is available to any patient but may be especially beneficial for people with dense breast tissue or a family history of breast cancer.

"When you have overlapping breast tissue, it can make something look like a mass that really isn't," said Dr. Deborah Wadsworth with Mercy Breast Center.

Wadsworth says the improved testing will help doctors better distinguish between dense breast tissue and a breast tumorlead which will lead to fewer call backs reducing anxiety for many patients.

Doctors recommend annual mammograms for women over the age of 40 who do not have a family history of breast cancer.
