ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)- Police have three teens in custody who they believe were involved in the murder of a 32-year-old bosnian man.

Robert Mitchell, 17, has been charged with first degree murder. Police say Mitchell and three other people beat the victim to death. At this point the motive is unclear.

Police said Zemir Begic was walking to his car early Sunday morning when he and the four suspects got into an argument. Shortly after, the suspects started hitting the 32-year-old with hammers. He died from his injuries.

Some in the Bosnian community are calling the murder a hate crime. It has sparked protests in South St. Louis.

Police don’t believe the fact that the victim was Bosnian played a role in the murder.

Monday night a large crowd gathered near the scene of the murder for a vigil and march.

It was an emotional night as people mourned the victim.
