Berkeley shooting protesters damage stores in the area

BERKELEY, MO (KTVI) – As night fell on Berkeley Wednesday night some members of the community gathered at the Mobil gas station in a vigil for 18-year-old Antonio Martin.

Some of the protesters broke off from the vigil and demonstrated by blocking some of the main streets and I-170 in Berkeley.

Police initially took no action against the protesters, only using rolling stops at intersections to protect protesters from traffic.

Around 9pm some demonstrators broke into some stores in the area around the Mobil gas station. Berkeley police arrested several demonstrators for causing property damage.  At least one person was caught on camera throwing an object at police.  Some people tried to break down doors of businesses in the parking lot across the street from gas station where 18-year-old Antonio Martin was shot and killed by a Berkeley Police officer.

Berkeley Mayor Hoskins said in an interview with FOX2, that some protesters had started to a business, but police officers stopped the looting immediately.

He further stated that over 40 police officers are on duty and had restored order in the area around the Mobil gas station and eventually clearing the parking lot at the gas station.

Berkeley mayor Theodore Hoskins said plans were in place to protect lives and property if necessary.
