Student in custody for bringing gun to Granite City High School

GRANITE CITY, IL (KTVI) - A student is in police custody after being caught with a gun at Granite City High School Thursday morning.  Police say all students are safe and there are no additional threats from this incident.  "After school started, we got  a tip from  a student there was a potential weapon on another student  so we investigated , said   Daren Depew , Granite City High School Principal.

The school  resource  officer  and faculty  members   took the students  into custody without incident.  The student claims he had the gun for protection  and  the gun was not loaded.

School officials say a gun was located on the student  and ammunition was found  in the student's backpack. "  We were surprised  when this happen , but we do have procedures in place to handle situations like this," said Depew.

Parents and area residents are concerned something like this could happen in their community. " When something like this happen in this community , it's surprising  and shocking, said Barbara  Brawley.  Concerned resident Laura Harris said " It's alarming and it's something that I would not expect to happen here in this community ."

The student remains in police custody until the investigation is completed . School officials notified parents of the situation using their call system
