BARNHART, MO (KTVI) – Deputies in Jefferson County are looking for the person who busted a dog out of doggie jail. The breaking and entering at the county’s animal control facility happened sometime Monday night into Tuesday morning, and the “liberated” pit bull, has actually been busted out of this place before.

“This is not the first time that we have had this particular dog stolen out of our facility,” manager J.T. Taylor said Tuesday. “We had it the first time in September of last year and someone broke in and stole it.”

It’s one of the many suspicious and unusual elements to the story.

The dog was brought to the Barnhart location on February 3rd when its owner was arrested by Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies. They did not identify the man or say what he was arrested for because they say they don’t want to compromise their investigation. The owner was released from jail prior to the shelter break in.

Asked if most people won’t think the owner simply came back and broke out his dog, sheriff’s department Captain Ron Arnhart said, ”That’s what it appears at this point, but we’re hoping through the investigation, once it’s complete, we’ll get that question answered but several others that we have that we want to have answered as well.”

Whoever broke into the shelter had their share of problems. They first broke into an outdoor “run” where dogs can get in and out of the building through a “doggy door.” The suspect went through the door only to find that inside there was a dog in the cage with him. That dog was being held in quarantine to make sure it didn’t have rabies after biting a child. It’s quite possible the suspect was bitten as well.

The quarantined dog escaped during this process, but the burglar had another surprise. The cage he was in was padlocked. He actually broke it trying to get out, but couldn’t free himself. He ended up going back the way he came, kicking in another door to the building, then eventually using bolt cutters to get into the cage housing the dog he was looking for.

This episode will eventually leave someone facing burglary charges and more. Had the owner simply gone to the shelter and played by the rules, the dog could have been retrieved for about $50.
