ST. LOUIS (KTVI) - A former worker at an adult care center has been charged with sexually assaulting a bedridden woman. 48-year-old Chassie Lee Wiggins’ bond is set at $75,000. The details of the case are graphic and disgusting.
Court documents indicate the crimes occurred at the Life Care Center on Chouteau in South St. Louis. Wiggins was charged with first degree sodomy/attempted sodomy and first degree sexual abuse. The victim, who is in her 50’s, could not defend herself even though she told him she didn’t not want to be touched.
The not for profit organization VOYCE has been around for decades helping people who live in long-term care facilities. Mary Lynn Faunton Donovan is the executive director of VOYCE. She said, “We’re the best kept secret. And, it’s a shame because were such an incredible resource.”
She said VOYCE has an army of trained ombudsmen who work to make sure patients are treated well at any facility. The service is free. She said, “We are available to go out and visit with your loved one and assess the quality of care, ask them a lot of questions to find out what their issues are and then our job is to resolve those grievances they have by working with the staff at that facility.”
Court documents indicate Wiggins’ victim was incapable of consent, or lacked the capacity to consent.
Although people who have loved ones at Life Care Center were surprised by the case, some said they are pleased with the care for their family members. Dewayne Petty’s mother is at Life Care. Petty said, “The care is great, it’s excellent. Everything I’ve seen and everything they’ve done has been excellent.
Lashonda Tolliver’s grandmother is also at facility. Tolliver said, “She likes the place she says she hasn’t had no problems with it.”
A spokeswoman for the company that runs Life Care Center said they will not comment on the case until they’ve done more investigating.
