Homes evacuated in Belleville for gas leak

BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI) - At least 7 homes have been evacuated in Belleville Illinois for a gas leak.   The location of the evacuation is in the 900 block of South Charles Street.

Sewer workers hit a gas main while digging.  There is a whistling sound in the area as gas leaks out of the main.

Ameren crews are on the scene along with the fire department. Emergency workers are calling this a one alarm situation.  They say it happens to workers about 5-6 times a year.  The sewer workers called before digging.
