MAPLEWOOD, MO (KTVI) - Football is getting sacked at Maplewood-Richmond Heights High School.

MRH School Board President Nelson Mitten said it was an easy decision for the district, because they only have 5-12 boys who are committed to play varsity.

It really is surprising considering just five seasons ago, the Blue Devils played for the Class 2 Missouri State Championship.

“Our soccer numbers are up and they are having success which is causing more kids to sign up, we started a cross country team, and boys are participating in our award-winning musical and drama programs," Mitten said.

The school hopes to bring back football in the near future at a younger age level in high school, maybe as a JV sport.

The school will also have its big homecoming party, just not around a football game. Plans are still being finalized.
