US Marshals arrest man wanted for attempted murder of State Trooper

ST. ANN, MO (KTVI) - A man wanted for the attempted murder of an Illinois State Trooper during a traffic stop has been captured.

FOX 2 News has learned that US Marshals arrested Gregory Nelson, 52, earlier this evening at an apartment in St. Ann.   The fugitive felony warrant was served at around 5:45pm.  Police say he was put under arrest without incident.

Nelson was accused of firing shots at the trooper during a traffic stop on Tuesday at 11:30pn in East St. Louis. The shooting that occurred on the I-255 northbound entrance ramp from State Street .

A trooper suspected Nelson of being intoxicated.  Nelson fired shots at the Trooper during the stop.  The Trooper fired back as Nelson escaped on foot.

A billboard had been put up in East St. Louis featuring Nelson's name and picture.

Nelson is being charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Unlawful Use of Weapons by a Felon.
