HOUSE SPRINGS, MO (KTVI) - A man is dead and the alleged shooter has been released from custody after a fatal shooting Saturday night at Rockford Beach Park in Jefferson County. It happened around 8:00 pm Saturday.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department says the suspect, age 30, was enjoying a night out with his family at Rockford Beach Park, when the victim approached the suspects’ vehicle and started a verbal confrontation. The suspect fearing that the altercation would escalate drew a handgun and shot the victim in the chest multiple times.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department identified the shooting victim as 34-year-old Patrick Marchlewski of North St. Louis County,

Deputies arriving on the scene called for emergency medical assistance to transport the victim to a St. Louis hospital.  The victim later died from his injuries at the hospital.

The suspect was booked into the Jefferson County Jail for voluntary manslaughter.  Charges were filed by the sheriff's office, but the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney's Office has declined to charge the suspect at this time.

The suspect has since been released from custody.  A witness tells FOX 2 the shooter was upset over a group leaving empty beer cans on the ground.

There are signs prohibiting firearms at Rockford Beach.  Jefferson County Authorities say their investigation is not over.
