JEFFERSON COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – There’s a renewed call for gun owners to secure their weapons.  The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office reports 682 guns have been reported stolen in the City of St. Louis during the past 18 months.  That averages more than a gun a day.

“Those guns don’t go away,” said Mary Pat Carl, Lead Homicide Prosecutor for the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office.  “Those guns can end up in the hands of criminals.”

Carl says sometimes weapons stolen in other counties end up being used to commit crimes in St. Louis City.  One recent theft in Jefferson County included $2,000 worth of guns from one home.  Jefferson County authorities say it’s not unusual for drug addicted heroin users to steal guns.

“We have nothing against legal gun owners,” said Carl.  “We have a problem with guns ending up in the hands of people involved in criminal activity.”

Carl and other authorities are repeating past calls for gun owners to be aware thieves are looking for weapons.

“One of the ways they can do that is to make sure that gun is safe and secure,” said Carl.
