Thirty years ago this weekend, video gamers grabbed their first super mushrooms and stomped goombas and koopas for the first time. On September 13th, 1985, Super Mario Bros. was released in the U.S.A .along with the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES.
It was an overnight smash hit and went on to sell 40 million copies. Mario and friends went on to appear in hundreds of video games, selling more than a quarter billion titles.
This week to mark the anniversary, Nintendo released its newest Mario game, Super Mario Maker for the WII-U console.
And in case you need an excuse to join Mario and Luigi on their adventures, September 12 is National Video Game Day.
