EDWARDSVILLE, IL (KTVI) – A Granite City man was sentenced to 24 years in prison for battering a 7-week-old infant in his care, the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.

The baby, born July 7, 2014, was hospitalized September 8 at Gateway Regional Medical Center due to having difficulty breathing. Medical staff determined the infant’s injuries, which included rib and leg fractures, were not caused from a single incident and they were not caused by accident.

The hospital contacted police, and investigators determined the injuries were consistent with a pattern of abuse. Police arrested the child’s parents, 21-year-old Kamryn Kerr and 20-year-old Ashlee Wethington, charging them with aggravated battery of a child.

Kerr, who was listed as the baby’s father at the time of his trial, was convicted in January 2015 on three counts of battery. The terms will be served consecutively and Kerr must serve 85 percent of the sentence before being considered for parole. It has since been determined that Kerr is not the biological father of the child.

Wethington’s case is still pending.

Meanwhile, the child remains in foster care.
