CLAYTON, MO (KTVI) – FOX 2 has confirmed evidence is mounting against a man suspected of shooting a Cardinal fan during a robbery as the fan walked to his car after a Friday night ballgame.

That suspect, 31, is locked up and in custody in the St. Louis County Jail for charges in another case.

The suspect is accused of beating his girlfriend, just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday in North St. Louis County.  That happened about 26 hours after the shooting, police said.

Chris Sanna, 43, of House Springs, and his three brothers were at the ballgame with their mother.  It was an early 60th birthday celebration for her.

The suspect robbed Chris and his girlfriend, then shot Chris as they ran away near their parking spot by the Old Cathedral, police said. The suspect even going through Chris`s pockets as he lay bleeding and paralyzed, police said.

The same suspect was arrested for domestic assault at an apartment complex in Spanish Lake, police said.

Police found a handgun in his vehicle there:  a Highpoint C-9, 9mm.

Police sources confirmed there was surveillance video of the suspect in a North County store where Chris Sanna`s credit card was used after the shooting.

Sanna’s parents and stepfather were elated at the news of the arrest.

“I was driving in my car.  I heard it on the radio.  Immediately I pulled over to the side of the road and texted immediately `suspect in custody’,” said Chris’s father, Tony Sanna.  “Thank goodness, you know.”

His mother, Candisa Sanna, said she actually jumped up and down.

“This is one more bad guy off the street and somebody else can go to a Cardinal game or a Rams game or go downtown for dinner and not have to worry that this guy is going to rob them and shoot them and possibly kill them or paralyze him,” she said.

She said Chris was also very pleased by the news but was still paralyzed below the waist and in a great deal of pain.

Even better news than the arrest, she said he reported a little bit of feeling in his left leg.

“This is all about Chris,” said his stepfather, Charles Shipman.  “Chris still has a long way to go.”

FOX 2 is not releasing the suspect's name or photo until he's formally charged in Sanna's shooting, which could happen Wednesday.

The suspect has a lengthy record, including convictions for assault, resisting arrest, and fraudulent use of a credit card.

He was in state prison from 2008 to 2013.

For now, he's charged with domestic assault and unlawful possession of a firearm in the Spanish Lake case.

Bond is set at $100,000, cash only.
