Successful St. Louis City volunteer effort sending 1,500 sandbags to Jefferson County
ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – The work of over 500 volunteers to fortify the River Des Peres against flooding in St. Louis is being felt in other communities. The City is shipping 1,500 sand bags to Jefferson County’s Public Water Supply District #2 treatment plant, which is threatened by the overflowing Big River in Eureka.
Volunteers started filling bags at 7am Tuesday morning. They shoveled 630 tons of sand into 36,000 sandbags. They built a wall along 1,200 feet of the River Des Peres between Morgan Ford and Alabama to hold back the rising waters.
St. Louis City Director of Operations Todd Waelterman says that they were overwhelmed by the volunteer effort.
