ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Powerball fever is gripping the country as Saturday's jackpot grows to $800 million.  Area stores have been very busy with folks lining up and  hoping for a fabulous start to 2016.

There are a few reasons why the jackpot has gotten so high. In October the Lottery Commission made a some changes, adding 10 more numbers. The range went from 1 and 59 to 1 and 69. So the odds of winning went from one in 175 million to one in 292 million. But the numbers for the Powerball decreased from 1-35 to 1-26.

Lottery officials say about 75 percent of the winners let the computers pick the numbers. So putting in birthdays or lucky numbers won't make any difference.
