SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) _ The state of Illinois will waive penalties and interest for taxpayers who cannot file or pay on time as a result of flooding that occurred in recent weeks.

The waiver will apply to residents and businesses in 23 counties declared disaster areas as a result of flooding in December and this month.

In a statement announcing the waiver, Gov. Bruce Rauner said now is the time to “focus on healing and recuperation, not deadlines.” He added that one those affected have recuperated, they can file their returns and pay taxes.

The National Weather Service says waters will be receding but it’s a slow process and there could be major flooding along the river until mid-January.
