K9 Officer Jethro succumbs to his shooting injuries

CANTON, OH – An Ohio police dog has died after being shot by a suspect this Saturday while on duty. Jethro’s handler says he died just after 10am Sunday. He was recovering at the hospital.

The Canton Police Department posted this message to Facebook:

“It is with heavy hearts that we must tell you all that we lost Jethro. He took a sudden turn for the worse and has passed.”

WJW-TV reports that police were responding to an alarm at a grocery store on Saturday morning. Officers were searching the area when the suspect fired several shots. he department’s K-9 Jethro was struck three times in the face , shoulder, and neck area.

Police returned fire and hit the suspect in the leg. He is identified as Kelontre D. Barefield, 22 and was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Police K-9 Association posted to Facebook Saturday night that it was very tough to get Jethro to actually rest, because “He’s just trying to beat this thing the way he’s used to, by fighting.” Jethro was given a sedative to help him rest..and he finally closed his eyes and slept.

Jethro’s partner was with him the entire time.
