ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Detectives spent the entire night looking for answers a traffic stop led to a police chase that ended in an exchange of gunfire. Two teens are now in custody.
A Velda City Police Officer tried to stop a vehicle for speeding in the area of W. Florissant and Lucas and Hunt at around 12:45am. Police say Davionne Churchman was going 50mph in a 35mph zone. After the suspect's vehicle failed to stop, the started a pursuit. A records check during the chase revealed that the car was stolen.
The pursuit traveled along Lucas and Hunt into unincorporated North St. Louis County. When officers arrived at Chambers and Vickie Place, police say the suspect began firing from the vehicle. A Velda City police officer who was among those in pursuit was the target. Police say a bullet struck the windshield of the marked vehicle.
The vehicle turned on Vickie and crashed into a tree in the 9800 block. The occupants of the vehicle immediately fled on foot. Officers fired rounds at the suspects.
One of the suspects dropped a handgun while running from the vehicle. Police have recovered that weapon.
A 15-year-old in the back seat of the vehicle was the only suspect that remained in the vehicle. The teen peacefully surrendered to police. The juvenile has been released into the custody of the Family Court.
Police found the driver of the vehicle, Davionne Churchman, Sunday morning. They received a call about a nearby shooting in the 9800 block of East Dell. The 19-year-old man, that police and witnesses identified as the driver, was shot in the buttocks. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Churchman is facing charges for assault on a law enforcement officer, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action. He is being held on a $250,000 bond.
Police say there is dash camera video of Churchman shooting at the officer.
No officers were injured in this incident.
