ALTON, IL (KTVI) – The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated Monday evening following a shooting that claimed the life of an 11-year-old.

The shooting took place on Acorn Street at the Alton Acres Housing Authority.

Investigators have a vague description of a red car they suspect was involved, but hope eyewitnesses and surveillance cameras will lead to an arrest.

Major Jeff Connor of the Major Case Squad said it appears the shots came from the direction of a car passing through the housing complex. As of Monday night, Connor said there was no evidence to suggest the child was a target.

Seventeen-year-old Elijah Harris said he picked up the wounded child, identified as Romell L. Jones,  and carried him to the complex’s recreation center. Jones was rushed to the hospital with a single gunshot wound to the chest, but was pronounced dead.

Harris’ mother, Tara Wheeler, called the shooting tragic and said there could have been multiple innocent victims. She and her son said kids were playing basketball when the shots were fired. They believe the shooting stemmed from a argument  involving someone in the area.

However, Connor said it was too soon for investigators to identify a motive.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Alton Police Department at 618-463-3505.
