SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) _ Illinois regulators want a Saline County mine owner to clean up coal waste discharge that entered a creek and forced a property owner from his home.

The state Environmental Protection Agency is asking the Illinois Attorney General’s Office to order American Coal Co. to immediately cease the discharge of coal slurry and other contaminants into Bethel Creek from its Galatia mine.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports the company, a subsidiary of Murray Energy, says it “promptly ensured the pump was turned off” and “took further action to assess and fix the leak” once it was discovered.

The discharge polluted 3.8 miles of the creek and forced an elderly resident from his home last week after waste from an injection well storage area seeped into his crawl space.
