ST. LOUIS (KTVI) - Hundreds of people took to the streets of North St. Louis Saturday with a message to stop the murders plaguing the community.

The event organized by Better Family Life drew more than 600 people.

A march started at a small North St. Louis park and ended with a rally at Better Family Life Headquarters.

Many in the crowd carried pictures of loved one whose lives were taken by violence.

The purpose of this rally was for the community to take a hard look at itself and the chaos being wrought by members of the community killing one another.

The family of murder victim Lavell Boyd was among the many here. The 32-year-old man was gunned down last September.  He left behind a family of 5 young children that are now fatherless.

His family members say they're encouraged by the event and that it shows people in the community are concerned.

Better Family Life says there are other unseen victims of the violence, senior citizens held hostage in their own homes.

Better Family Life says it's going to hold this rally ever year. But in the meantime they're planning to start new initiatives to tackle poverty, and joblessness, and try their best to get the message across to young people to put down the guns, something many say is a lot easier said than done.
