ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI) - Stitching together a surprise for a St. Charles woman who gives handmade gifts to young cancer patients at area hospitals; and she does it despite her own painful health problems.

Sherri Stanczak crochets hats for children with who have lost their hair because of cancer treatments. Her brother, Dave, describes her as the most unselfish and giving person he knows. That’s why she was presented with our Pay It Forward award – a $500 gift card from First Bank.

Stanczak, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis several years ago, has had many surgeries over that time. Despite her health problems, she works tirelessly weaving one hat after another, making sure they appeal to children in the style of Disney characters and superheroes. It helps her stay positive.

“How I choose to do it is to put my mind on someone else's problems, because if I do that then I realize my problem isn’t so bad for one and then also I feel that I’m helping someone else and it make me feel better,” she said.
