FESTUS, MO (KTVI)- Flames gut a shuttered tire business overnight near Festus. This morning investigators say they may never know what exactly caused the fire.
Crews rushed to the scene on Highway 67 South not far from I-55 about 1:25 a.m. When they arrived, flames were already shooting from the building. The fire quickly grew to two alarms with about 50 firefighters responding from eight different departments.
More than a dozen were fire trucks at one point were at the scene.
It took crews more than two hours to get the fire completely out.
The Festus Fire Chief, Chuck Boyer, says there are no hydrants in the area so water had to be trucked in to fight the fire. The owner of the property says the tire business that used to be housed in the building called Ram Tires and Wheels shut down back in September of 2014. A neighboring tire business was renting the space to store tires but that stopped at the end of January.
The State Fire Marshal was called in to help find a cause.
But at this point we`re told the cause is going to be listed as undetermined because of the extent of the damage.
Chief Boyer says the building is unstable so investigators can`t dig through the rubble to help find a cause.
Boyer says there is nothing suspicious about the fire.
