BENTON, Ill. (AP) _ Illinois State Police say a Kentucky man who led officers on a high-speed chase was fatally shot by police in southern Illinois after he fired several shots.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a residential burglary Tuesday afternoon. Officers immediately located and started pursuing the suspect.

Illinois State Police Lt. Michael Alvey says the suspect hit a deputy’s vehicle after refusing to stop and fired multiple shots at officers. He says the suspect’s vehicle became disabled on Interstate 57, and then he carjacked another motorist and continued to flee.

Alvey says the suspect eventually left the vehicle near Benton and continued to shoot at officers. He says the suspect was shot by officers and pronounced dead.

The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Joshua Moreno of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
