URBANA, Ill. (AP) _ The union that represents University of Illinois faculty who are not on a tenure track plans to strike Tuesday and Wednesday.

Shawn Gilmore is president of the Nontenure-Track Faculty Coalition Local 6546 and a literature lecturer. He said Monday that members hope the strike gives school administrators more appreciation for non-tenured faculty.

The union has about 500 instructors, researchers and other faculty but it isn’t clear how many will strike.

A university spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The union has been negotiating with the university for its first-ever contract since October 2014.

The union’s members typically work on one-year contracts and are not part of the tenure system that offers professors and others job protections. The union wants longer contracts.
