ST. LOUIS, MO. (KTVI)- Best Buddies International, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will be hosting a Best Buddies Friendship Walk this Sunday, April 24. The event is a 5k (1 mile) walk and will be held at Creve Coeur Park in Maryland Heights, Mo.
This year Lori Chalupny, a member of the Women's Word Cup Soccer champion and St. Louis native, will be the honorary chair for the 2016 Best Buddies Missouri Friendship Walk. Chalupny stopped by this Fox 2 studio this morning to speak about the walk this weekend and what Best Buddies International does for children with disabilities.
Chalupny, a St. Louis native, is currently the head coach-designate for the Saints women's soccer program at Maryville University. She will succeed as head coach following the 2017 season. Chalupny, who is a strong supporter of inclusion programs for people with IDD, is also sponsoring a team in the Best Buddies Missouri Friendship Walk.
Missouri Friendship Walk organizers have set a fundraising goal of $75,000 for this year's event. Last year's event raised $62,000 and drew 300 participants. Money raised through the walk is used to support Best Buddies Missouri`s program development and to provide up-to-date resources for members from staff at the state office in Creve Coeur, which is dedicated to forming, promoting and administering social inclusion programs across the state to over 180,000 Missourians with IDD.
