Woman sentenced for credit card fraud scheme
ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – A St. Louis County woman who scammed elderly people via a utility bill pay scheme was sentenced Thursday to nearly five years in federal prison, U.S. Attorney Richard Callahan said.
Between August 2012 and May 2015, Cherri Barton would call elderly people while pretending to be a utility company. Barton would threaten to have the victims’ services disconnected unless they made an immediate payment. The victims would then provide Barton with personal information like Social Security Numbers and birthdates, as well as credit card and bank account information.
Prosecutors said Barton would contact the victims’ creditors and had herself added to their accounts as an authorized user. She scammed more than $112,000 from her victims and their creditors.
Barton, 30, pleaded guilty in January to one count of aggravated identity theft and three counts of access device fraud.
