ROCK HILL, MO (KTVI) – A man pried open a locker inside a popular fitness club and stole a member’s belongings, Rock Hill Police said.

“We’ve had cases where the locks were cut off. But not to this extent,” Rock Hill Detective Sgt. Kevin Clinton said.

Det. Sgt. Clinton said the man had signed up for a guest pass at the Club Fitness on Manchester Road. He allegedly waited in the locker room for an unsuspecting member to enter.

“And as he’s in the locker room, obviously he’d be able to see what’s being put in the locker. When you walk out to work out, there’s a time delay,” Det. Sgt. Clinton said.

During that time delay, the man used tools to pry open the door, destroying the locker. He’s accused of stealing many valuables, including a smartphone, and an expensive watch.

A serial number helped police track down some of the stolen items.

St. Louis County police recently located that man and arrested him following a foot chase in south St. Louis County. The man is now awaiting charges. He could be charged with not only felony theft, but destruction of property to the fitness club’s locker.

Authorities stress the importance of taking steps to prevent becoming a victim of theft at fitness centers.

Det. Sgt. Clinton said members should keep valuables with them while they are working out. Otherwise, he said, leave the valuables at home. He said it is unwise to store valuables in a parked car. Criminals are often scoping out parking lots for those kinds of potential targets.

The key point to is to be alert at the gym, he said.

“If you’re in a club and you’re working out, pretty much you run into the same people because you usually have a pattern because you’re coming in at the same time,” he said. “If you see something that doesn’t look right, go to the desk and talk to them about it. If it’s really that odd, and you go to the desk and they don’t, you may want to watch them. Get the license plate number. In many cases, your gut is really telling you what’s happening.”
